What are the basic components of mechanical seals?

The basic components of a mechanical seal function as follows:

(1) The face friction pair (moving and static rings) keeps close to the sealing surface to prevent medium leakage. It is required that the dynamic and static rings have good wear resistance, the moving ring can move axially, and the wear of the sealing surface is automatically compensated to make it fit well with the stationary ring. The stationary ring is floating and acts as a buffer.

(2) The elastic elements (springs, corrugated plates, serpentine sleeves, etc.) mainly act as compensation, pre-tightening, and buffering, and are also factors that produce a reasonable ratio of pressure to the sealed end face. It is required to always maintain the elasticity to overcome the friction of the auxiliary seal and the transmission member and start the ring to compensate. (3) Auxiliary seals (O-rings, V-rings, wedge-shaped rings, and other special-shaped seal rings) mainly serve as sealing for stationary rings and moving rings, and also play a role of floating and buffering. It is required that the auxiliary seal member of the stationary ring ensure the sealing between the stationary ring and the gland, so that the stationary ring has a certain degree of floating; the auxiliary sealing member of the moving ring ensures the seal between the rotating ring and the shaft or the sleeve. Materials require heat and cold resistance to be close to the medium.

(4) Transmission members (drive pins, transmission rings, transmission seats, transmission sleeves, transmission keys, transmission lugs, or dog-type couplings) whose role is to transmit the torque of the shaft to the moving ring. Materials require corrosion and wear resistance.

(5) The fasteners (set screws, spring seats, glands, assembly sleeves, bushings) serve as the positioning and securing of static and dynamic rings. The correct positioning is required to ensure that the sealing surface of the friction pair is in the correct position and that the pressure of the spring with good fit is maintained. At the same time, it is easy to disassemble and install, and it is easy to be in place and can be reused. With the auxiliary seal fittings should pay attention to the installation of the sealing ring chamfer and the amount of compression, with particular attention to the dynamic ring seal ring and shaft sleeve fit, requiring corrosion resistance and wear resistance, if necessary, using a hard surface layer.
