What are the technical requirements for mechanical seal springs?



What are the technical requirements for mechanical seals for springs? Why do mechanical seals tend to use springs for several years?

Mechanical seals are generally cylindrical helical compression springs. According to the characteristics of mechanical seals, the main technical requirements of compression springs are:

        The spring product drawings shall include main technical parameters such as wire diameter, medium diameter (outer diameter), free height, working height, working load, spring stiffness, effective number of turns, and material.

        The load value of the spring at the working height (67%±5% of the free height is recommended as the working height) should generally be between 62% and 72% of the test pressure load.


Note: When measuring the spring characteristic, the load value of the spring pressure and height is used as the experimental load value.

       When the spring is compressed to 80% of the total deformation, its normal pitch circle should not touch.

       The springs with both ends being ground, in the free state, the squareness of the perpendicularity of the two ends of the spring axis is ≦0.05H0.

       The springs with both ends being tight and flattened, and the grinding ring of the bearing ring is greater than or equal to 3/4 turns, with a surface roughness Ra of 12.5 μm and a tip thickness of not less than d/8.

       The surface of the spring should be smooth and there must be no visible defects such as cracks, punctures, etc.

       In recent years, many wave springs have been used for the introduction of mechanical seals. Among them, a large amount of wound wave springs are used. The wound wave springs have the advantages of high strength, good flexibility, compact structure, and small installation space. It is machined with a dedicated winding spring device, wound wave spring technology


Requirements are as follows: 

       The peaks of the wrap-around wave spring should be arc-shaped, and flat tops or spires are not allowed.

       The crests and troughs of the adjacent upper and lower layers of the multilayer wound wave spring should be aligned, and the angular misalignment in the circumferential direction should not exceed 5°.

       The radial misalignment between adjacent upper and lower layers of multi-layer wound wave spring is not more than 0.15mm.
